Browned Butter Rice Krispie Treats
These browned butter Rice Krispie treats are super simple to make and only take a few more minutes to make than regular treats. Whats special about them is that we brown the butter and toast the marshmallows. Also by setting some marshmallows aside and adding them in at the end we get pockets of ooey gooey melty marshmallow.
Browning the butter takes a bit of patience but it’s so worth it. You’ll know the butter is browned because it will be fragrant, it smells kind of nutty and sweet to me. You will also see a light brown sediment start to form at the bottom of the butter and it’s color will be more golden. Once it’s browned we melt our marshmallows.
I like using unsalted butter because it lets me control how much salt I add to a recipe. After adding the salt and vanilla, it’s time for the Rice Krispie cereal. This part can be hard to mix and takes a bit of patience to evenly coat the cereal.
Final step of making these is adding back in those marshmallows we set aside. Look at those pocks of marshmallow! Enjoy!
Servings | 12 treats |
Total Time | 30 minutes |
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter ( 12 tbsp)
- 20 oz of marshmallows
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 7 cups Rice Krispie cereal
Instructions
- In a deep pot or dutch oven, brown the butter over medium heat. This may take a while, but be patient, if you turn up the heat you risk burning the butter. You will know its browned because the butter will smell fragrant and you will see it change to a golden color, there will be what looks like light brown sediment at the bottom of the butter.
- Take 3 cups of marshmallows from the 20 oz and set those aside, we will be using them later. Add the rest of the marshmallows to the pot and melt them, cook until they start to toast and turn beige in color. Usually about 4-5 minutes.
- Mix in the salt and vanilla extract.
- Add the Rice Krispie and stir, it may be hard to mix at this part.
- Once everything looks even add in the 3 cups of marshmallows we set aside. Be sure not to over-mix. we want gooey pockets of marshmallow goodness in our treats.
- Let cool in a parchment lined baking dish. Once cooled remove and cut into treats. Enjoy!
